To get rid of type 2 diabetes, it’s important to understand what causes the condition in the first place. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin (the sugar regulating hormone). It may also occur when the body is resistant to insulin, as a result of faulty leptin signaling.

A research trial led by Professor Roy Taylor at Newcastle University in 2011 found it was possible to cure diabetes. The research, which was funded by Diabetes UK, involved eleven people with obesity-related type 2 diabetes. Study subjects were required to reduce their food intake to 600 calories per day for two months.
Remarkably, glucose levels in the study subjects normalized within just one week on the diet. Three months later, they were retested and 7 of 11 managed to completely get rid of diabetes. This same approach has since been used on a number of diabetic patients with promising results.
The Rationale Behind Getting Rid Of Type 2 Diabetes
So, what is the scientific basis for reversing and curing type 2 diabetes? Taking a closer look at the aforementioned study reveals some interesting observations.
First, the trial came about due to the observation that diabetic patients with various forms of bariatric surgery due to obesity experienced diabetes reversal within a few weeks following surgery. At first, researchers believed gut hormones were responsible. However, the study at Newcastle provides a more logical explanation for how and why diabetes can be reversed.
According to Taylor, the lead scientist in the study, reversing diabetes involves energy balance in the body. When consumed calories exceed the number of calories burnt, the excess energy is stored as fat in the liver and pancreas, raising the level of cholesterol and liver triglycerides.
Storage of fat in the pancreas impairs insulin producing beta cells. This reduces the amount of insulin produced and results in diabetes. This happens not just with overweight people, but also with regular people who have a naturally increased tendency to accumulate fat in the liver and pancreas.
In the above study, researchers tracked blood glucose along with liver and pancreas fat and beta cell function. At the beginning of the study, MRI scans indicated high fat levels in the pancreas and livers of subjects and impaired beta cell function.
Reducing calorie intake led to significant burning of the fat in the liver and pancreas. As fat levels returned to normal, the pancreas resumed normal insulin production.
The study suggests diabetes can be reversed by reducing the amount of fat in the pancreas and liver, which enables the pancreas to regain its normal insulin producing abilities. Dietary changes are the easiest way to achieve this. Experts also recommend combining diet with exercise, as exercise not only helps burn excess fat, but also decreases insulin and leptin resistance.
